First Mile is a leading recycling business based in North Acton, and we are seeking a proactive and experienced Transport Manager to join our operations team. This role is pivotal in ensuring smooth daily operations, driver management, and fleet compliance. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing transport operations, ensuring road safety, and maintaining high standards of service delivery. Flexibility is essential, as the role requires availability for day and evening shifts, as well as occasional ‘out of hours’ communication.

Key Responsibilities:

Operations:
- Deliver daily communication briefings to drivers regarding service updates, missed collections, additional tasks, or absences before and after shifts.
- Oversee shift planning to ensure appropriate driver levels are in place to maintain service efficiency.
- Monitor and manage driver timekeeping, attendance, and sickness absence.
- Conduct disciplinary and grievance investigations, interviews, and hearings as needed.
- Assist management with ad-hoc duties, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.

Transport Management:
- Assist the senior Transport Manager with daily driver management, ensuring smooth operations.
- Ensure full compliance with road safety regulations by performing regular audits and checking driver hours.
- Oversee and manage vehicle maintenance using the CONVEY platform, maintaining accurate paperwork and records.
- Conduct weekly fleet audits to ensure vehicle availability and compliance.
- Manage relationships with external partners, including garages, agency staff, and maintenance providers.
- Oversee incident reporting processes and ensure all accidents and issues are thoroughly investigated.
- Monitor and track vehicle downtime and fuel usage to optimize fleet efficiency.
- Ensure all driver training is compliant, including CPC certifications, toolbox talks, and other required qualifications.
- Handle recovery bookings, defect reports, tyre management, and retorques with garages.
- Investigate and resolve any issues related to unaccounted mileage or vehicle usage.
  
Compliance and Auditing:
- Ensure site compliance with all relevant standards, including ISO, DVSA, and Health & Safety regulations.
- Maintain and oversee the R2C system, addressing any compliance-related issues.
- Ensure that all transport operations meet audit requirements and maintain the necessary level of compliance.

Working Hours:
- Flexible working hours are required to ensure sufficient contact with both day and evening shifts.
- Availability for out-of-hours communication is essential to address urgent transport issues when they arise.

Qualifications and Experience:
- Proven experience in transport or logistics management, preferably within the recycling or waste management industry.
- Strong knowledge of road safety, driver regulations, and fleet compliance.
- Experience with transport management systems (CONVEY, R2C, etc.) and audit standards (ISO, DVSA, etc.).
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to manage a team and work with various external partners.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work flexibly in a fast-paced environment.
